Went back up to Lano…Again
Friday: Got up here very late and wanted to go to the jetty to catch some herring in the lights on my gidgee. I got 2 Herring and 1 cobbler. In the end as I was leaving some stupid kid decided to use my gidgee and drop it in the water… after one cold swim at 10pm at night (off a jetty I have caught sharks off) I got my gidgee back.
Saturday: Got a few Skippy and Herring in the day. Did not catch any fish at night off the jetty but my gidgee rubber broke…making my gidgee fall in the water…again. I was wearing long pants so after taking them off and getting into my undies I had to get into the water….but at least I got my gidgee back.
Sunday: Went out fishing with my mate and had a double hook up on big trevally. After that I lost my beloved SX-40 (with upgraded single hooks) to some sort of toothy critter. When we got back Mitchells parents had arrived from Perth with the package…Mitchells speargun. So we went out to Spot 1, which was not producing so we just had practice shots with the gun. Then we went to spot 2. Mitchell decided to break in his gun with some battery acid (buff bream) whilst I went and got a Breaksea Cod on my gidgee YEWW. I also speared a nice queen snapper, which fell off the gidgee, and Mitch saw a big Breaksea cod which was to close to rocks to shoot and a Pink Snapper, which he did not shoot because of its size (just under or just over). At night I went out in front of my house with my flick rod and caught 1 Herring, 4 Whiting, 1 flounder and a flathead.
Monday: Planned to get up a 5am and fish in front of my house for some tailor or big whiting but was way to cold so I gave up and went back to bed. At about 9am when I got up I walked down to the beach to have a quick cast but gave up because seaweed was everywhere. I wandered down to the jetty to catch some whiting but could only manage 3 before I had to go home for lunch. After lunch I went out spearfishing. I went 100m more out to sea than my usual spot for a change. Got in the water and after getting a fish for burley I saw a Silver Trevally but for some reason this fish was staying bust out of spearing reach so I went down and lay on the bottom for about 30 seconds with this time the fish gained a bit of confidence and come towards me so I loaded up my Gidgee and WHAM I got my first Silver Trevally on the spear at 36cm. On the swim back to the boat I saw a big Baldchin Grouper swim underneath me. I swam back to my now favourite spearfishing spot with new enthusiasm. I saw a baby queen snapper swim underneath me so I went down to have a look at this fish and watch it swim, half way down I looked up momentarily to see a massive large white fish. My first thought was ‘OH NO THIS IS A SHARK…MY TIME HAS COME’ but that thought turned into ‘OH MY LORD THAT IS A WHOPPER SAMPSON FISH’ as what I was seeing was a 1m+ 20kg+ Sampson Fish, I looked back just in case something was chasing it then I saw a school of the 15+ Sampsons all of the same size as the original one. As they were swimming around I swam up to one, despite being terribly undergunned with my little orange gidgee I let fly at the closest one. If I was 1” higher I would have hit its backbone and killed it instantly and if I was 1” to the side I would have got it in the guts and it would have wounded it enough for me to get a spine/ head shot. After all the Sambos had left I got a bit worried…what if something was following them!! So I realised I had had enough and went home knowing that if I had convinced my dad to buy me a spear gun I would have got the fish of a lifetime. When this all happened I had what could be described as an Angling Epiphany.
Tuesday: Headed out for a quick spear in the morning. In the late afternoon I went to find some new fishing spots for demersals in very shallow water (4-5m). Overall I got 3 Breaksea Cod. Unfortunately 2 were undersize and were successfully released. Fortunately the one that was size was a whopping 46cm! Very pleased considering the very shallow water (could see my bait on the bottom).
Wednesday: Went home…no fishing
