Furuno 585 heads up

dhugle's picture

Just a heads up guys, the furuno 585 are not waterproof or water resistant but more like splash proof. During the jurien comp i had a fair bit of water land on the sounder which in turn sent it crazy. A quick phone call to  taylors on the Monday, they said get it straight in, unfortunately to late, she was f@#$ed. It turned out over time water had been getting inside  through the gain and mode knobs, and there was a large rust stain on the mother board. New mother board and $1200, all good now, not.

Hey Dave

This is on Taylors web site
I reckon you should be calling Rhys back
Waterproof construction permits installation on open bridge
http://www.furuno.com.au/products/viewProduct/product/20/9

dhugle's picture

thanks lindsay

will follow that up tomorrow, wonder if the techs have read that

dhugle's picture

you would think so

i had a lengthy discussion with the techs at taylors, and they said not water proof, and it is the shops that sell them that spruik the water proof line. Plenty of silcone grease inside and and a clear cover being made should do the trick

Admin's picture

Bullshit

They advertise it themselves  "The FCV-585's waterproof construction allows it to be installed on any bridge"
False advertising is a hefty fine so I would be ringing them back and explaining that.
If they still think that they can get away with it then go to
http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/consumerprotection/
If they don't come to the party let us know.

fresh water

may be alright, pretty sure the salt water is the damage maker, plus if you continue to use the unit after it has been coverd in salt water it reacts with the mother board due to the current running through it.

What a difference.
Seeing so much more definition.
We were calling when the strike would happen (We thought we were).
Ended up with 2 Dhu one 13kg a couple of BA and a couple of bust off's.
